Building Relationships: Iron Sharpens Iron

“I had many mentors and they didn’t know it.” – Maggie Wilderotter, CEO of Frontier Communications. Many of us partake in this philosophy without realizing it and in the same token, fail to recognize the power of associations.

A common practice I do quarterly is to go through my old notes and glean nuggets of things I have learned from different groups I have attended. Each time, I find some that I had implemented and some that I had forgotten about but sought to do at the time. Yet, nothing resonates as more valuable than the memories of who I met and how they have affected my life. So many of them have are now cemented into my list of people who have inspired, encouraged or offered insight. The interesting thing is that most all of these valuable relationships were found at groups.

ironsharpensiron Building Relationships: Iron Sharpens IronHaving been involved in leadership for over 20 years, I often like to say, “It’s all about the people!” It would seem that the more I think about what has been the greatest force in my growth and in my career; it has and always will be “the people.” I am so very thankful for the relationships built through groups like Grand Rapids Professionals for Excellence (GRAPE), BNI, Net Plus Connections, Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Breakfast Club and others. These types of groups are so often formed out of a heart to bring people together and help them to succeed.

Interestingly, when we attend these events with the focus on ourselves and what we can gain from it, we may find little value and consider them to be a waste of time. But when we attend with a mindset that seeks to “sharpen another” the opportunities that build for us and our businesses are endless!

A brand new group is now forming, and with it a new opportunities! With the permission of John Potter, who has been a valuable connection to me, I would like to introduce “GR Business Breakfast.” We will meet every second Tuesday beginning this month on January 14 from 7:30am-9:00am. Our focus will be to empower our area business owners, leaders and CEO’s. To learn more about the speakers, location and information, visit http://grbusinessbreakfast.org.

Resolve today for 2014, to help other succeed. In the words of the late Zig Ziglar, “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”
